On the Importance of Curators
I gravitate to more curators than creators on social media and content channels. To me, they’re more enjoyable, help me get smarter and add more value to my life. Here’s why I have so much respect for knowledge curators.
They help cut through the clutter.
In an information-abundant world, curators use the sharpness of their skills to help cut through the clutter. They put interesting ideas within my reach that are otherwise far removed from my information spheres. And as this happens more and more, better ideas start to make their way into my life and surface more naturally. I value having hand-picked things to consume from someone whose worldview matches mine.
Help shape a point of view.
The other thing I enjoy about curators is how they funnel factoids through a broader point of view. Although they don’t create anything new, they contextualize the things they come across through a point of view, adding a new layer of meaning to something that already exists. They connect dots, not just collect them.
I find knowledge curators fascinating! And wish to cultivate the sharp eye, discipline, and wisdom to be one myself.
Here are some knowledge curators I find fascinating and follow regularly:
- Trivarna Hariharan — curator of poetry from classic to contemporary on various themes (on Instagram)
- Ann Friedman — curator of all things pop culture, feminism, and creative thinking (on email)
- Austin Kleon — curator of all things creative, fun, and weird (on email)
